Common Mistakes Beginning Texas Holdem Poker Players Make

There are several mistakes commonly made by beginner Texas Holdem poker players.  Being aware of what these mistakes are will help you to avoid making them and will make immediate improvements in your poker game.

The most common mistake that a beginner makes is being impatient.  Many beginners get bored waiting around for premium hands to play.  Instead they get tempted to play poor hands and end up losing.  As a beginner, stick to the best hands and pay attention to the other players at the table.

Not paying attention is another mistake made by beginning Texas Holdem Poker players.  By paying attention to the other players at the table you will gain valuable information about your opponents.  If you do not pay attention to the game, you fail to observe your opponent's moves. It becomes difficult for you to read your opponent.

Many beginners let past hands affect their emotions. We have all held a strong hand that ends up losing when your opponent hits on both the turn and river. It happens, forget about it.  Staying in control will help you to avoid losing your chips to the others at the table.

Make sure you play the correct limits for your skill level.  Better players tend to play at the higher levels.  By choosing a higher limit game you are choosing to play with players much better than you.  Work your way up through the limits. Start by playing in a lower limit game and when you are a consistent winner, and then go to the next level. Remember, the higher the limits, the tougher the game.

As a beginner you should learn to protect your hands.  Don’t slowplay your strong hands and allow opponents to draw free cards which might beat you. Make them pay to see a card!

When choosing whether to bet, call or raise consider what hands your opponent may hold.  Don’t base your actions only on what your hand is or what hand you are trying to make especially when the hand your opponent has or may make will be better than yours.  Learn to read your opponents hands and playing style.

Many beginners play the same hands the same way every time.  Mixing up how you play will make it difficult for your opponents to read your hands.

As a beginner don’t go around chasing money that you have lost on past hands by playing every hand. This is how you end up playing bad hands and losing even more money.

Finally, be sure to evaluate the hands that you play.  Are you playing too many hands, playing them incorrectly?  By studying your game you can detect leaks and fix them.  This is one sure way to get you to stop donating your chips to the others at the table.
